The ROMI knee study

Help us test a new way to track knee recovery.

We are looking for adults having a knee replacement to use ROMI at home during their recovery.

A check-in in the ROMI app: seven short steps, two questionnaires and five camera checks, each taking one or two minutes

Why we are doing this study

After knee surgery, recovery is usually checked at a few set appointments. We want to find out whether short checks on your own phone can measure how your knee is moving between those appointments, accurately enough to be useful to your care team.

You will be helping to test the app. It will not change the care you receive.

You may be able to take part if you

  • are 18 or older
  • are having, or have recently had, a knee replacement
  • have a smartphone with a camera
  • can stand and walk a few steps safely, with or without a walking aid

It may not be right for you if you

  • have been told not to stand or walk without supervision
  • would find it hard to follow on-screen instructions, even with help from someone at home

The study team will check whether you are eligible before you start.

What’s involved

Each check takes a minute or two. You prop your phone up, follow the guide on screen, and ROMI does the measuring.

  1. Before surgery, if possible

    A starting point

A few checks to record how your knee moves now, so later results can be compared with your own baseline.

  2. During your recovery

    Regular checks

Short checks at home when the app reminds you, such as bending your knee, standing up from a chair and walking.

  3. At the end

    Tell us what you thought

A short questionnaire about using the app. Your feedback shapes what we build next.

Keep going to all your usual appointments and physiotherapy. The app is an extra, not a replacement.

Your data

You are given a study number. The study team keeps the list linking numbers to names securely and separately.

  • Videos stay on your phone. Only the positions of joints such as your hip, knee and ankle are sent.
  • You can leave the study at any time without giving a reason, and ask for your data to be deleted.
  • Leaving will not affect your care in any way.

Is it safe?

The checks are everyday movements. Only do the ones you can do safely, use your usual walking aid, and have someone with you if you feel unsteady.

ROMI does not diagnose. If you have sudden severe pain, redness spreading from your wound, a fever, or pain and swelling in your calf, contact your care team or call NHS 111 straight away. In an emergency, call 999.
